What is Common Purpose Navigator?

Navigator is a unique experiential leadership training programme designed to broaden the horizons and perspectives of young, bright professionals who are tipped as people to watch in their organisations. It takes participants outside the confines of their day-to-day experiences to the reality of leading beyond authority.

It gives them a behind-the-scenes view of how society works by addressing some of the key issues facing it. The programme is based in an urban environment but the lessons learned against that backdrop are not exclusive to any one place.

Navigator gives participants the chance to put the pieces of the urban jigsaw together in a stimulating and dynamic way.

Who is Common Purpose Navigator for?

Usually, but not exclusively, participants are under the age of 35, and come from extremely diverse backgrounds, representing a balance of the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

What is the course format?

The course is designed to reflect current issues and themes. It is characterised by variety and challenge, with participants visiting sites and engage in group-work. They are encouraged to engage with real life case-studies and experience the opportunity to challenge and be in conversation with leaders from across society.

Underpinning all of this is the prospect of inspiring individual participants to learn from the diversity of the peer group. Throughout the programme, they are encouraged to challenge their preconceptions - to step outside their comfort zone and explore the scope of leadership and creativity that is characteristic of their work place and, particularly, the South African society.

Participants take part in several types of leadership engagement:

Core days - explore key leadership themes as participants learn from each others' ideas and experiences.

Raids - in small groups participants head out into "someone else's world" and find out how change happens there.

Forums - participants meet leaders who do things in different or unconventional ways and yet succeed. In groups, they work together on leadership challenges, coaching each other.

Trans-local modules (optional) - participants gain new perspectives by attending a module in another town, city or country to learn how their counterparts elsewhere tackle challenges.

Net.Connect - allows participants to link up online - locally, nationally and internationally - to share the enormous range of knowledge within the whole group.
