
Charlene Deacon (CEO) has 20 years experience in the electronic
media, having risen up the ranks from presenter on Radio Port
Natal, through programming, supervisory and managerial positions at
East Coast Radio, to Managing Director of Kaya FM. She was very
successful in turning a loss-making Kaya FM into an R75m per annum
business, and the 2nd biggest radio station in Gauteng.
During her multifaceted career Charlene has amassed a wealth of
strategic and policy knowledge of the South African media business,
underpinned by hands-on technical and operations experience. After
majoring in English and Drama at the University of KwaZulu-Natal,
Charlene initially qualified and practiced as a teacher, but soon
seized an opportunity to join Radio Port Natal as a presenter.
Promoted to Operations Manager and then Deputy Station Manager, she
played a key role in the privatisation, digitization and relocation
of the station. In 2000, she moved to Johannesburg to take on the
challenge of Kaya FM, and her achievements in this regard have been
acknowledged by a range of awards, including being ranked amongst
the ABSA/MTN 'Ten Most Remarkable Women in Business' in 2004.
Charlene's passion for media as an instrument of empowerment and
her practical experience in management and development, have
positioned her ideally to mentor and train budding entrepreneurs
and old hand Executives alike in the minefield of change management
and business development, which she has been doing for the last 2
years. She has in depth experience in developing business
plans and facilitating strategic planning sessions that enable
businesses to achieve their desired goals.
